(i did the wiki under my married name and that is why is is called basy rothstein as opposed to bashy kamenetzky.)
As far as my discussion posting:
I think wiki is a great tool for teachers to use to facilitate active learning. The students can become independent learners and enjoy it too. it is a great tool to motivate students to think, be creative, and learn! And- just like all the other work we have done in this course- it gives the students a vacation from the "chalk and talk " method of learning. Children step into the shoes of teachers- and discover on their own! of course the teacher has to oversee that the students are using the wiki with the correct respect and productively. I would use my wiki with my third grade students who are learning and exploring different phonics rules. I would teach the rules to them first and then introduce the wiki to them to use as a review/re-teach. i would allow student who complete their assignments early to go to the back of the classroom and use the wiki. I would also make some sort of rotation system to ensure that every student has the opportunity to use the wiki. I would start off having one wiki and then once my students have all explored the wiki and are getting "bored" of it- i would change the wiki to one level more advanced. I would also allow them to check out the wiki in their own homes and share it with friends and family. I believe they will be proud to "show off" their accomplishments. My wiki will not be my main content delivery tool. I will teach the lessons in a classroom setting- and the wiki will be an enforcer and review. I think a wiki is a great opportunity for discussion. i Will encourage students to post questions they have on the topic, comments they can add, and any advice they have to offer. I will be on top of the situation to see that other students are responding. I think this will create a true "learning experience" in the atmosphere. as far as individual portfolios and collaborate note-taking, i think is a little too much information for my third graders to handle. i would rather keep it simple and take it slow. Enjoy!
